Online Desk, Dhaka: Amid anti-quota protests and violent clashes in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the capital, Dhaka, on Monday. In a televised address, Army Chief Wakar-uz-Zaman announced that the military would form an interim government.
Reports suggest that Hasina, along with her sister Sheikh Rehana, has left the country. An AFP report noted that violent clashes erupted on the streets of Bangladesh on Sunday, resulting in at least 300 deaths. However, no official statement has been released.
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar’s Statement on Bangladesh
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar stated that India is in contact with officials in Dhaka. India is monitoring the situation concerning minorities in Bangladesh. There are approximately 19,000 Indian citizens in Bangladesh, including around 9,000 students, most of whom returned in July.
Concerns Over Minority Attacks
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar mentioned that the violence in Bangladesh, especially against minorities, is alarming. He noted that the violence started in June-July and intensified on August 4, leading to Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. The situation has severely impacted minorities, which is a matter of concern.
VHP’s Reaction to Bangladesh Violence
Alok Kumar, the international president of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), expressed concern over the attacks on minorities, including Hindus and Sikhs, in Bangladesh. He urged the international community and the Indian government to ensure the safety of minorities in Bangladesh.
Continued Violence in Bangladesh
Despite Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, violence continues in Bangladesh, with over 100 deaths reported in the past 24 hours. Several Hindu temples and institutions have also been targeted.
Opposition Supports Government on Bangladesh Issue
In an all-party meeting, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar briefed leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, about the current situation in Bangladesh. The opposition expressed support for the government’s stance.
BNP Calls for Interim Government
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) urged President Shahabuddin to dissolve parliament and form an interim government. The BNP has yet to propose a candidate for the next Prime Minister.
