Today, doctors from both government and private hospitals in Uttarakhand will participate in a 24-hour strike. The strike, beginning at 6 AM on Saturday and concluding at 6 AM on Sunday, is a protest against the tragic rape and murder of a female resident doctor in Kolkata. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) called for this strike in response to the horrific incident.
During the strike, emergency services, postmortem procedures, and VIP duties will continue as usual. However, outpatient department (OPD) services and elective surgeries will be suspended.
Protest Against the Kolkata Incident
Dr. Manoj Verma, the state president of the association, and Dr. Ramesh Kunwar, the general secretary, emphasized that doctors across the country stand united in seeking justice for their colleague. They condemned the attack on doctors who were peacefully protesting in Kolkata, as well as the vandalism in the hospital, attributing it to the failure of the state government.
The doctors are calling on the central government to intervene, demanding the immediate arrest of the criminals and strict enforcement of existing laws to protect medical staff in hospitals. To show their solidarity, doctors will hold demonstrations in their hospitals and offices with posters and banners. A candlelight vigil and prayer meeting will also be held in the evening.
